Keratosis Pilaris: Overview

Keratosis Pilaris

This is a very common skin condition. In keratosis pilaris, skin-colored, brown or red spots form around the hair follicles. This is a harmless condition and is inherited. The occurrence is mostly on the upper back, arms, thighs, cheeks and other places. You can see rough small bumps around the hair. These look ugly and therefore are a concern for those who suffer from keratosis pilaris. Keratosis means an excess of keratin, the cells that make the outer skin and the Latin name of hair is pilus. That is how this name is derived. This is not a contagious condition.
